God does not comfort us to make us comfortable only, but to make us comforters. ~ John Henry Jowett

The house I grew up in had a big wrap around porch. I loved that porch. I loved the big swing, I loved the secret side escape route. I especially loved the front steps. There were only 3 but they were deep and wide.

Jesus: man or God?

cown of thorns
Crown of Thorns

Have you ever struggled with the idea of whether Jesus was a man or God? Maybe the struggle is simply trying to understand how Jesus could be a man at all? I confess that one blows my mind and probably always will.

We know Jesus was a man and at the same time God because the Bible tells us He was. Jesus was born of Mary through the Holy Spirit and so grew up as a human man, pretty simple. The “how” that really escapes me is how Jesus our God who created the heavens and all things in them became a man…how does God step down from the throne of glory and become a man like us? I guess that article will have to wait until after I can interview God, after I am in heaven…

Jesus was born as a normal human male baby: Matthew 1:20-21 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

In (Luke 1:39-45) we read that when Mary greeted Elizabeth, Elizabeth’s baby leaped in her womb. Elizabeth referred to Mary as “the mother of my Lord”.

(Luke 2:4-7) tells of the actual birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The subsequent verses tell of the angels appearing from heaven to the shepherds and telling them of the Savior.

Jesus was also circumcised (Luke 2:21)

Jesus grew up as a human boy. (Luke 2:39-52) Verse 40 says the child (Jesus) grew and became strong. Jesus would need that physical strength later on in life during the ordeal of the crucifixion.

Verse 42 specifically cites Jesus age at the time; He was twelve years old. Joseph and Mary were going up to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover as they usually did. On this occasion, the boy Jesus stayed behind in the temple courts (verse 45). In verse 49 Jesus lays claim to His divinity despite being a human boy at the time. Jesus says, “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”

Verse 52 is a key verse in determining that Jesus was indeed a man, And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. I obviously cannot explain the “how”, but if Jesus was growing in wisdom and stature, then this statement most definitely points to His humanity because God does not have to learn anything…but a man does. I cannot explain how Jesus the man could be learning and growing in wisdom when at the same time His divine side knows all, but some things have to be taken on faith, and this passage does prove that Jesus was human!

Was Jesus a man, really?

Jesus knew what it was like to be hungry (Matthew 4:2)
Jesus knew what it felt like to be tired (John 4:6)
Jesus bled like we do (John 19:34) there are other examples of this where bleeding is not specifically mentioned but is inferred through the events leading to the crucifixion and the crucifixion itself. (John 19)
Jesus was tempted in all the ways we are (Hebrews 4:15)
The Apostle Paul wrote that Jesus was a man (1Timothy 2:5)
Jesus died…God does not die but a man does (Romans 5:8)

I deliberately left out the verses that mention Jesus was thirsty as those verses in proper context do not show Jesus as being thirsty, rather they emphasize other points.

John 19:28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”  I doubt thirst was a large concern on the cross, this was said to fulfill scripture.

(John 4:4-26) In verse 7 Jesus asks the Samaritan woman for a drink, now do not get me wrong, Jesus may have drank water here, He probably did after a long journey. However the main contextual point here was not Jesus drinking water, it was Jesus using a drink of water as the perfect opening to evangelize to this woman.

In part two we will look at the Old Testament and the evidence to be found there, that Jesus is both God and man.

Cheating Death – God Has Plans for You – Jeremiah, Psalms – Inspirational Bible Verses

Today’s post is a special one, this is a testimony written by a blogging friend. Darrell Creswell wrote this and it is a gripping story of what utter depression, hopelessness, and despair can do to a person. Having been down this road myself, I have some understanding. God had and has plans for Darrell…and if you are at this point or anywhere near it…God has a plan for you as well. Please read this article and be encouraged.

Many thanks to Darrell Creswell from Darrell Creswell’s Blog for graciously granting permission to repost this great true story on Believing God Today.

I opened the chamber, loaded the gun with bullets, cocked the hammer back, put it in my mouth and pulled the trigger.

There is nothing worse in life than when you have lost all hope. When you lose all hope, you are left feeling destitute and alone – without God. I have been there, on the edge, not caring about my soul. Not caring about where I would spend eternity. Not caring about what would happen in the end -just wanting it to end.

I found myself alone in desolate, barren fields of self-doubt, breathing the bitter dust of disappointment and confusion etched in the dry cracked earth of my life’s tragedy and pain. It is a place I know all too well. Perhaps you know the place, I pray you don’t.

I have known good times and I have known bad times. The good times are good but the really bad times are deep, dark, painful and hopefully never to be seen again in my life. It was the 1990s, I was addicted to methamphetamines. It is another story how I got there, but nevertheless I was there. The grip of a drug addiction is strong and deep. I believe that drugs open a portal to allow demonic oppression to beset you, allowing satan to attempt to steal your soul.

There are many things in life that can steal our hope and leave us shattered and broken. As we abandon God and struggle with our pain alone, the enemy tightens his grip as without reliance on God we are helpless and vulnerable.

Pick a word, any word – they all are all the same when you are there. And they compound one on top of the other to take whatever is left of your hope away.

Estranged          Forsaken             Abandoned            Lost            Forgotten         Uncared-for            Exiled             Alone              Tired                     Stressed           Wretched          Unhappy            Despair             Hopeless        Fear

These feelings will lead to many disasters in life; loss of marriage, loss of family, loss of social standing, and in extreme cases, as I found myself in, even loss of life.

I opened the chamber, loaded the gun with bullets, cocked the hammer back, put it in my mouth and pulled the trigger. The gun didn’t fire. I pulled the trigger over and over again – it wouldn’t fire. In a rage, I emptied the rounds from the chamber, grabbed fresh bullets from the box, loaded the gun and repeated the previous scene again. The gun would not fire.

I am still here. I shouldn’t be.  With demons dancing round my head, God had His angels standing guard over me, preserving my soul.

High on drugs, up for 4 days, and with my mind ravaged by the effects of two years of drug abuse, I took a pair of pliers and began pulling the bullets apart trying to see why they wouldn’t fire. I couldn’t understand it.

I don’t remember passing out. At the beginning of the whole event that night, I had taken 12 NyQuil and chased them down with all the liquor I could find in the house. I awoke two days later.

Satan tried to take me to the pit as I abandoned God. I stood at death’s door and with all my might tried to force my way in – but my God stood in the way, holding the door shut. Very shortly afterwards I returned to God, abandoned my drug use and allowed God to open a new chapter in my life, again another story.  Months later I would shoot the gun after gaining the courage to hold it again, load it and pull the trigger at a target on the fence. This time it fired, over and over again. I can’t explain why that night in October it would not fire. Was I so high that I forgot to release the safety, or did God supernaturally stop the gun from firing? From where I stand now it really doesn’t matter.  All I know is that God was my rescue, my hope in my time of need.

Jeremiah 30:17 I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the Lord.

There are times in life when we feel so tired, worn and stressed out, that we think we are done. We think we cannot even take one more step. We abandon all hope. We simply give up. That is what happened to me. It is when our life is in crisis, when our circumstances have drained all our strength from us; it is then we need to hope and wait upon the Lord. God wants to give us a new life, He wants to bring us a new tomorrow, and He wants to renew our strength. He wants us to have life, and live it in abundance. God intends a wonderful life for us.

Psalm 147:3 God heals the heartbroken and bandages their wounds

Life will leave us crushed and broken, but Jesus is the Great Physician, He heals the broken in heart. He heals us by his blood, curing us when we cannot cure ourselves. He heals us by the application of His sacrifice on Calvary, applying pardoning mercy and grace, streaming through his blood.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

We have all had times where we thought we were in God’s will only to find things coming apart on the broken wings of good intentions. Many times in life our hopes are dashed, promises broken and our way seems lost. That is exactly the place for God to come to our rescue.  It is in realizing that we are but humble pilgrims lost without God’s direction that we can find our way.

As we journey through life, we will get beaten up- we will get hurt and bruised along the way. Scarred memories mark our journey like markers on a highway.  There are times of joy and bliss that we savor, but sometimes it seems that they get lost in our journey, and abandon all hope. We wonder if tomorrow will bring; a better life; a better situation; a more prosperous job; or a happy marriage. It is only in God that we can find the hope for our future. If we put our hope in God, there will be no tragic ending to our lives.

God knows what His will is for our lives, he has declared it, and it is set in stone. God says to you, “I know what plans I have for you. Gods says, I have success for you, I will make a way for you, I have a job for you, I made you, I formed you, I breathed life into you and I redeemed you. I promise you that God has a plan for you. We have a hunger pang inside of us to have a happy life, and to find comfort and joy in our home and in our relationships. God has a plan to make that happen in our lives.

Realizing God’s plan for hope and a new future will lead you where you have never been before. You may be walking where you have never been before in new path blazing through the problems that you face in front of you, as God destroys the enemy that is behind you. So go ahead and move forward in life knowing confidently that God has it all planned out for you if you will but trust Him. Follow God’s plan for your life, and trust His unfailing, forgiving love. In His plan, every pain, hurt, wound, and disappointment that you have experienced will find peace. If you will but trust His plan for your life, you will find the sense of wholeness and completion that you long for.

The Reality of Spiritual Warfare

by Neil Anderson

Under Spiritual Attack
1 Timothy 4:1
The Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons
A seminary student stopped by my office to tell me he was having difficulty getting to school on time. What should have been a five-minute drive lengthened to 45 minutes because a voice in his mind kept telling him to turn at intersections. Not wanting to disobey what he perceived to be the “still, small voice of God,” he was treated to a tour of the city almost every morning.
A pastor’s wife, desperately needing the comfort of the Holy Spirit and desiring His leading, passively believed that whatever entered her mind was from God. She soon found herself bound by fear and plagued by condemning thoughts.
These examples underscore the wisdom of John Wesley’s words: “Do not hastily ascribe things to God. Do not easily suppose dreams, voices, impressions, visions or revelations to be from God. They may be from Him. They may be from nature. They may be from the devil. Therefore, do not believe every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they be from God” (Martin Wells Knapp, Impressions , Wheaton, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, 1984, p. 32).
In a survey of 1700 professing Christian teenagers, 70 percent admitted to hearing voices, like there was a subconscious self talking to them. I don’t believe they are psychotic or paranoid schizophrenic. There is a battle going on for their minds. I have shared with many tormented people that they aren’t going crazy but are under spiritual attack. They usually respond, “Praise the Lord, someone understands.” It’s freeing to know this truth, because if there is a battle going on for our minds, we can win that war.

Prayer: Lord, today I choose to test the spirits and assume my responsibility to think upon that which is true.

1700 Believing teens…hearing voices. If that does not scare you, then there is something wrong with you, or you simply do not believe it.
Do not be to quick to dismiss the idea of teens and all others in fact hearing voices. We are in the end times, not the beginning of the end times, but rather well into them.
Spiritual warfare is going to increase, it is going to get worse. Kids are thought of as the hope of the future right? So why wouldn’t Satan want to target them for warfare? This makes perfect sense! If the up and coming generation is the one that will run the world in the future, then it only stands to reason that they (teens) would be attacked by the demonic forces.
Satan and his cronies cannot be blamed for everything that happens, sometimes things just happen…it’s called life. However that being said, this threat to our young ones needs to be taken very seriously. What does the Bible say about the end times, specifically pertaining to people’s attitudes?
2 Timothy 3:1-5 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God–
Where do you suppose this kind of thinking and attitude is coming from? The prince of the air, the ruler of the world. If you were to look up deceit, finesse, subterfuge, lying, and a host of other negative attributes and abilities…Satan ought to be listed as the master!
Defend and teach the younger generation, educate all others. So many in Church today disbelieve in this stuff, but that does not make it any less real. Why is the reality of spiritual warfare not readily recognized? Because Satan is a master at work, hie deception and subterfuge is masterful…it even works on many believers.
Lastly, many have been taught (if they were taught at all) incorrectly that the forces of evil cannot touch a Believer, or even in some cases that Satan is a fairy tale. This is very far from the truth. A Believer cannot be possessed, a Believer can however be heavily influenced by the demonic realm, and much damage can be done. There is as reason the Apostle John says to test the spirits
(1 John 4:1-3). There is also a reason we are given the Armor of God.
Read the Word, Worship God, Wear the Armor of God.
Teach others to do the same.

Glory, Praise, and Worship

Glory to God in the highest at all times, in all places, in all things.
Receive not God’s glory unto yourself, for you are but a servant.

Praise to the One, the One who leads in all things even death.
Jesus commanded many things; He also never failed to practice what He preached.
Jesus purchased life; with His own blood…glory and praise to the King.

Jesus is the Rock, upon which we are enabled to stand.
Jesus is the Great Sheppard, our guide through a life lived in a difficult world.
Take heart, Jesus overcame the world for us.

God our Father hears us, because Jesus asks Him to.
Jesus lives to make intercession for those who follow Him.
While we were yet sinners, Jesus rescued us.

On our knees are we made able to stand.
On our knees we speak and are heard by a Holy and perfect God.
On our knees we gain strength to face the day.

The Word of God is just that: the Words of God.
The Word is living and active, surround yourself with it.
The Word is powerful, avail yourself of its incredible power today.

God over all, the Creator, the Sustainer of all, Giver of life…became a servant.
Likewise do we need to serve and be His servants.

Worship Jesus and no other, give praise and worship to the Lamb who is alone worthy.
Worship not…your money, your family, your possessions, your job…
Worship the Lord; release your idols.

Because of I AM…we are.
Because of the One who is the Way…we can follow.
Because of the One who is Truth…we can know.
Because of the One who is Life…we have life now and forever.

Father bless your children with a love that is on fire for You. May we who are your children also love one another. Help us Lord to serve the Body of Christ in whatever way we are capable of doing. May we honor you in our service to You Lord. Let us not put anything above or before You Lord. Help us in our weakness Father, that You may be glorified by showing your strength through our weakness. Father may You also grant us discernment that we may know what is of You and from You, and what is of ourselves or the world. Lord may all who read this be blessed by these simple words.
In the Great Name of Jesus, Amen.

I wish…

I wish there was no more war

I wish all people would learn to get along with each other

I wish love were not used as a word that means nothing

I wish Christ was revered by all people not some of them

I wish babies were never aborted

I wish the truth were always spoken in love

I wish churches focused on Christ first, everything else second

I wish all people understood worship is about God, not us

I wish families stayed together

I wish there was no abuse in the world

I wish love of others always came before love of self

I wish everyone would come to Jesus

I wish the Bible spoke to all, and that all would have ears to hear

I wish evil would perish

I wish Satan were a child’s tale

I wish the Truth were accepted

I wish that violence were not a solution

I wish that drugs and alcohol were not self-medications

I wish all the hurting rest and peace in our Lord Jesus Christ

I wish we all possessed faith like a child

I wish all sin were a thing of the past

I wish everyone possessed the peace of Christ

I wish there would be no more killing

I wish for all of these things knowing they will not happen. True complete peace and wellness shall not come until our Lord and Savior comes. So many are lost, and many will remain lost. I cannot begin to imagine a world without suffering and loss, but the Word of God promises just that, so it will happen. One day we will all be in eternity together with the Lord of life…those who believe anyway.

It is my prayer that the hurting would find rest and peace in the only true source of healing…Jesus. It is also my prayer that the lost would be found and brought into the fold.

Imagine if you will the worst Believer on earth, a true believer in Jesus but not one who lives the faith well at all. Now imagine the best, the least sinful person on earth…but this person does not know Jesus. Now realize that the believer is going to heaven, and the sinner who may very well be a better person than the Believer is going to hell because he/she does not know Jesus.

I wish all would come to know Jesus…a life is a terrible thing to waste.

Selfless love

Love is an awesome thing. We all desire love and to be loved.

Love has a not so good side to it as well. Why do we love, what is the reason behind it?

Many things are done in the name of love, things that are not loving and should have nothing to do with love. Killing has been done in the name of love, so has hating a person for what that person did to someone that (we) loved. These things are not love.

When we love is it truly selfless, or are we looking for something in return? I do not think we love selflessly if we are honest about it. When I love someone, I’m looking for something in return, even if that something is simply being loved in return because I love that person. However there is often more to it then that.

We expect things; we expect that the person we love will do certain things for us. Like what you ask?

Well how about these, do you see yourself in any of these?

We expect someone we love to:

   Overlook our faults

   Deal with our bad behavior

   Forgive us all things

Look the other way in things we would not overlook in others

Put up with our individual idiosyncrasies

Agree with our way of thinking

There are many more that could be added to that list I’m sure, and I’m guilty of all of the above. Some of this is of course taking for granted the one that loves me; it is also an entitlement mentality. Both of these are wrong of course.

This is not how God loves…a very good thing for us. The only truly perfect non-self-serving love is God’s love. God loves us with no expectation of anything in return. “But wait”, you say, “God expects us to do things and love Him, the Word says so”. While it is true the Word commands us to love God, the distinction here is that whether or not we do all that He says, and love Him in return…God will still love us.

God has no burning need within Himself that needs fulfilling; therefore God is free to love selflessly. We on the other hand have needs that have to be met. These needs that are basic to all humans and are not necessarily bad things are at the same time what prevents us from truly selfless love. We as humans are capable of selfless acts of love, but not selfless love as a whole. If we could truly love selflessly as Christ loves us…we would have no need for Jesus. We shall be like this someday when we meet Him and He finishes His work in us.

Think of God as a self-contained unit. No needs of any kind that have to come from without Himself. Everything that makes God who He is is contained within Himself. God does not seek approval from others, He grants it. God is not out looking for love, He is love. God is not busy sinning and looking for a way to stop doing it, He paid for sin in His own body to abolish it from ours.

God is free to love because God is truly free, free of any expectations. Expectations is a word that has no meaning to God. Think about it if God is omniscient, and He is without a doubt, then why would He have any expectations? God already knows all that has happened, and is going to happen. To have an expectation is to think something is going to occur. God knows what is going to occur. When we have an expectation we think, or expect that something is going to happen, but we do not know that thing is going to happen…God does know.

Think on this as the perfect example of God’s perfect and selfless love.

Jesus who was both God and man came to save us from ourselves. He paid a debt He did not owe, and we could not pay. But wait, it gets even better. God’s own people, the Jews did not even recognize Him. They (most of them) would have nothing to do with Him and still do not today. This people that God selected for Himself, these people who did not even recognize Him, who spurned Him…who wanted to kill Him. God died to save these people. Not because the Jews or anyone else could do anything to Jesus without His permission, because they could not.

God died for His chosen people the Jews and also the Gentiles because He wanted to save us…that my friends is love.

Do you know this love?
